Experience in the field as a vet tech will play a large role in the amount of hourly pay or annual salary that you can expect to receive or earn as a veterinary technician.  The more experience you have, the more responsibility you will be given, whether that comes a greater annual salary. With less than eight years experience the average veterinary technician salary is less than $25,000 while a veterinary technician with closer to 15 years of experience can expect to see upwards of $45,000 per year.

Education level will not only determine salary rates, but will also play a large part of whether or not you will be able to find employment. Occupational employment projections reported the career of veterinary technicians is one of the top 20 fastest growing careers where education makes a difference. Job Description and Career Overview

With the veterinary technician job market expanding so quickly, the job demand is expected to rise by 28% by the year 2012. This will ensure job placement for most graduate from veterinary technology programs.

It is the sole responsibility of the veterinarian to diagnose, prognosis, perform surgery and prescribe medication. It is the veterinarian technician’s responsibility to be the veterinarian’s nurse as well as a lab technician, radiography technician, surgical nurse and client educator. Within education to become a skilled veterinarian technician you can become employed at many places other than just veterinary clinics. Some of these places include biomedical research labs, zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, livestock health management and pharmaceutical sales.

Veterinary technicians will spend long hours on their feet during a typical 40 hour work week. Some shift work may be involved depending on where you work and if the clinic you work for is a 24-hour clinic that offers emergency medical care.

Veterinary Technician Programs and Schools

Today there are over 100 accredited vet tech programs located throughout the United States. Throughout various community colleges, technical and vocational schools you can earn an Associates degree in as little as two years, or a bachelor’s degree in four years. All Schooling does not necessarily have to be done on site and can be done through distance learning through online courses that are also accredited through the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Once you have graduated, almost every state in the United States requires a veterinary technician to then take and pass a credentialing exam. By passing this exam you then ensure the public that you have at least the basic and entry-level knowledge of the duties that will be performed by you in a veterinary clinic or hospital.
